Your daily trip to and from work doesn't have to be a complete waste of time. Experts say that with some strategic planning you can easily use your commute to recharge and boost productivity.

Amy Hoover, president of Talent Zoo, says that whether you drive, carpool, take a train, bike, or walk, making the most of that time can help set up the rest of your day. "If you're interested in knocking out some work or simply relaxing, there are things you can do to turn a lengthy commute from a frustrating time-eater to a satisfying and productive time of day."

Ramp up or wind down

The first thing you need to do is recognize what kind of person you are, says Connie Thanasoulis-Cerrachio, a career expert and cofounder of SixFigureStart. If you're energized in the morning and tired in the early evening, for example, use your trip to work to accomplish tasks and your trip home to relax and reenergize.

Putting in over 40 hours a week is becoming something of the norm in the US for a number of occupations, with some workers putting in an average of more than 58 hours a week.

As a result, more Americans are feeling overworked.

To find jobs that allow you to maintain work-life balance but still get paid well, we analyzed US Census data for about 478 occupations distilled by the Minnesota Population Center's 2013 American Community Survey Integrated Public Use Microdata Series.

According to this data, the average working American logs about 39 hours a week, and the median earned income — a sum of wage, salary, and business income — across all occupations is $32,000.

While some may work more or less than the average depending on their employer or where they are in their career, people with the following professions report typically working an average of less than 40 hours a week and earning at least $50,000 a year.

What it's Like to Have the Best Job in America Right Now

Physician assistant is the best job in America right now, according to a report from Glassdoor.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports these professionals — who typically practice medicine in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals — make over $97,000 a year, on average.

And thanks to the growing need for healthcare services, combined with a shortage of physicians, PAs are in high demand right now. There are more than 45,000 job openings on Glassdoor alone.

That and the high pay are what helped PAs earn the No. 1 spot on Glassdoor's 2015 list of the Best Jobs in America.

To compile the ranking, Glassdoor identified 25 specific jobs with the highest overall Glassdoor "Job Score," which is based on a five-point scale. The job score is determined by equally weighing the average annual base salary shared by US-based employees over the past year, career opportunities ratings shared over the past year, and number of open job listings posted to Glassdoor in a three-month period.

"At Glassdoor, we know that there are two factors that job seekers consider most when determining where to work: earning potential and career opportunities," says Scott Dobroski, Glassdoor's career trends analyst. "Because of this, we wanted to factor both of these into what it means to have a 'best job.'"

Dobroski says Glassdoor also takes into consideration the number of job openings because it is an indicator of employment opportunity. "The more jobs available, the better their chances to get hired," he says.

On the list there's a heavy concentration of tech jobs and jobs within the healthcare industry, Dobroski notes. "Both of these industries are known for experiencing tremendous growth over the past few years, leading to a high demand-for-hire and compensation for employees," he explains.

C-Suite executives are known for pulling in a pretty penny. But as it turns out, doctors make even more.

That's right: On average, those sporting scrubs and stethoscopes bring home fatter paychecks than those donning suits and ties, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates survey.

The survey, which reflects May 2014 salary and employment data gathered from more than one million businesses, found that 16 of the nation's top 30 highest-paying occupations are in the medical field.

The best-paying job of all: anesthesiologist.

On average, anesthesiologists in the US earn an average annual salary of $246,320.

According to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), these medical doctors are responsible for the safety and well being of patients before, during, and after surgery. In the US, they're required to complete a four-year undergraduate college degree, four years of medical school, and a four-year anesthesiology residency program. Most anesthesiologists become board certified, and many complete an additional fellowship year of specialty training.

A 2014 physician compensation report by Medscape found that nearly 80% of anesthesiologists spend 40 hours or more per week with patients.

We all hope to see our paychecks grow every year, but for many, raises are few and far between — or they're so small they hardly make a difference.
In fact, the national average for salary increase is 2.2%, according to the BLS. But that's certainly not the case for everyone.
To find out who saw the biggest spikes in salary over the past 12 months, Glassdoor looked at total pay data (which includes base pay, tips, commissions, bonuses, and all other forms of pay) for people in all professions and pinpointed the 20 jobs for which people reported the most significant growth between September 2014 and September 2015.


For a job title to be eligible for the report, it had to have at least 500 salary reports shared by US-based employees on Glassdoor between September 2013 and today.

"This jobs report is helpful for anyone who may be thinking about a new job, and wants to go into a role where salary is increasing more than average," says Scott Dobroski, Glassdoor's community expert. "What's especially interesting about the results is the wide variety of jobs, showing that pay is rising across tech and healthcare jobs in particular, which isn't a big surprise, but also in retail and food services. We're likely seeing an increase there due to the minimum wage and fair wage debates continuing."

The "stress tolerance" for each job is a rating on a scale from zero to 100, where a lower rating signals less stress. It measures how frequently workers must accept criticism and deal effectively with high stress on the job.

Good news for job seekers: Employers are now the most optimistic they've been about hiring since 2007.

Employment services firm ManpowerGroup asked more than 11,000 employers in the 100 largest US metropolitan areas about their hiring plans for the three-month period ending in December and found that employers in all 50 states plan to increase their payrolls during the fourth quarter of 2015.

Of the surveyed employers, 21% expect to increase their payrolls and 6% say they'll decrease their staffing levels. This yields a net increase of 15% that plan to hire — or 18% when seasonally adjusted, which is up 2% from last quarter, and up 3% from last year at this time.

Those are the strongest predictions in eight years.
"The US labor market continues to show broad-based, stable growth, with significant milestones over time such as hiring prospects at a seven-year high, unemployment at 5.1% and weekly jobless claims recently reaching a 40-year low," said Jonas Prising, CEO of ManpowerGroup, in a press release. "But as the labor market tightens, employers are increasingly telling us they are having difficulty finding skilled candidates — a situation not helped by the low labor participation rate."
